Hi Everyone,

Melissa here again, I wanted to blog today about something near and dear to me - the animals. I volunteer, what extra time I have, at the Maricopa County Shelter system. Not all of the dogs, but many there are pitbulls or pitbull mixes. These pups often get looked over because many people may misunderstand the breed. It can be quite vexing and alarming at how many well educated and otherwise very smart folks get caught up on stereotyping these sweet pups.

Upon my volunteer work at the shelter, I got introduced to a young woman by the name of Abby. Abby is also a volunteer, she also happened to form her very own animal rescue (Standing Proud Pitbull Rescue Center) which at the time, did not have their 501c3 standing. What astonished me is all that she was able to accomplish without it. From the support of others, fundraiser, car washes, etc, etc., Abby was able to save quite a few animals without the legal non-profit standing. On top of that, she had built a great relationship with staff at county and became well trusted in the animal welfare community. This - on top of keeping a job to help pay the bills! I admire her ability to do all she does despite the constant naivety and negativity of many on pitbulls.

When I started at Puff & Fluff, Liz the owner had always been very flexible in her support and efforts of allowing me to help rescue groups such as Standing Proud. I was always weary to overstep any boundaries but I have learned more and more that her stance on giving back to the community is as crystal clear as the day she stated as such to me when I first started - ¨run with it, Melissa¨ (with a smile on her face). This is what is great about Liz and the shop - her ability to see that giving back is such an important aspect.

¨Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records.¨ ~ William Arthur Ward
That quote is what sets Liz and her business apart from so many and why she continues to receive such high praise from so many. It is also a great quote for what Abby does and all of her hard work for the pitbulls.

I hope you can join us in our event that will help give back to the community, to the animals. THANK YOU!
