Isn’t it ironic that we celebrate ‘Work like a Dog Day’ during the dog days of summer?! A time when most folks are relaxing and enjoying the lazy, hazy, sunshine-filled months! Of course, others follow the “it’s a dog’s life” mantra; meaning that dogs really have it all, with no worries or cares in the world! However, the phrase “work like a dog” likely originated from the trades of sheep dogs and sled dogs – dogs that were bred to, well, work!

‘Work like a Dog Day’ falls on the fifth day of the eighth month of the year. August is also the month in which we celebrate International Assistance Dog Week, from Aug. 5 through the 11th. Many dogs do so much more than laze around and eat treats all day! From therapy dogs and police dogs to seeing-eye dogs and more, these beloved animals certainly do their share of hard work around the world!

So, how should you celebrate this special day? You may choose to literally work like a dog! Whether you begin a project you’ve been putting off or you decide to finish a task that’s been taking up much of your time, this is the day to get it done! Work your tail off and spend the rest of your summer days soaking up the sun! Additionally, today is a great day to reward those in your life who work like dogs! From your colleagues or employees to your housekeeper or nanny, it’s always nice to show a bit of extra appreciation – especially if it’s unexpected!
