New Yorkie, New Yorkie, here we come! Planning a vacation with your furry friends can be really exciting! Whether you’re heading to a muttropolitan area or somewhere more rural, you should schedule a check-up for your pet to make sure they’re in good health and are all up-to-date on their vaccinations. Also be sure your pet has an updated ID tag and that they have a secure collar as they are prone to normal wear and tear over time.
Transportation
When it comes time to decide the method of transportation, make sure it’s pup and/or feline friendly.
-
If flying — transporting your pet inside the cabin is the best option, but it’s generally only an option for smaller pets. If your pet will have to be in the cargo hold, try your best to choose a direct flight; one, it’ll be shorter and two, it’ll eliminate the risk of your beloved pet not being transferred to a connecting flight.
-
If traveling by car — secure your pet with a safety harness or in a carrier, in the backseat or rear area of a vehicle. Make sure they have good ventilation and that they aren’t trapped in the sun. Also, be sure to use extra caution when opening doors so that Fido doesn’t make a run for it; make sure they’re secured with a leash beforehand, just in case they make a break, you can grab hold of them more easily.
Hotel/Accommodations
Whether you’re staying in a hotel, Airbnb, a campsite or heading off to sea, it’s a good idea to check the pet policies beforehand. Attempting to sneak Fido in last minute won’t always end well.
-
If you’re staying at a hotel, check on pet policies before booking your room. Some hotels require a pet deposit and some also have strict leash rules. While some hotels will provide food dishes for your pet, you should bring your own just in case. Be sure to pack everything from toys and food (including bottled water), to grooming supplies and blankets with a familiar scent so they feel at home.
-
If you plan on cruising at any point with your pet, it’s important for your dog to have a life jacket; you may think your dog is a strong swimmer, but depending on the conditions, your pet could face life-threatening problems.
Traveling with your pets can be fun, but not always practical. Before going away, consider hiring a purr-fessional sitter or boarding your pet; there are plenty of options these days. Every pet and situation is different, but careful planning and research can take a bite out of the stress to ensure a furry great adventure!
