Dog owners, we’re a picky bunch. Picky about the food we feed our beloved dogs, the products we’ll buy them. And most of all - which humans we’ll entrust with their care.

With that in mind, how do you select the perfect groomer to work with your dog? And did you know that picking the right groomer could be life-saving?

As much as our dogs enjoy a quick belly rub from us, Professional dog groomers go over every inch of our dogs with a fine-tooth comb. They have even been responsible for spotting cancerous lumps quickly enough to save a dog’s life.

For the conscientious owner, wanting to make sure that their dog gets nothing but the best. We have put together a quick guide on how to pick the best groomer in the pack!

1. ASK FRIENDS OR YOUR VET

Word of mouth is one of the best places to start. Start by asking your veterinarian. They know your dog’s disposition, and can often recommend a groomer who will fit his specific needs.

2. CHECK FOR UP TO DATE CERTIFICATION

The best pet groomers are those that never stop learning. Look to see whether they have professional certification, and whether they have kept this up to date.

3. CHECK AVAILABILITY

This one may seem a little strange, but a great trick for finding out whether a groomer is worth going to is checking how quickly you can book an appointment.

As a rule of thumb, the better a groomer, the longer the waiting list. That’s not to say that those with availability on the same day aren’t amazing. But you do want to check that you’re not their only client!

4. ONLINE REVIEWS

One of the speediest ways to take your groomers longlist down to a shortlist is to check the online reviews. Read through them thoroughly, as some “bad” reviews can be a complaint on the price. Likewise, great reviews can be on price alone.

You want to look for reviews detailing the care, quality, and customer service.

5. LEAVING DOGS

The best way to judge the quality and welfare is top notch at any grooming facility. Hang out outside, and see how the dogs are when leaving the salon look.

Do they look calm, and relaxed? Have they been well groomed? If the answer is yes to both, and you’re actively considering sending your dog to this establishment. Don’t be afraid to ask the passing owners if they would recommend the salon.

6. TRANSPARENCY

Great dog groomers have nothing to hide and should be more than happy to allow you to stay with your dog. And watch while they groom. You may be surprised what can go on behind closed doors, and if your grooming parlor is opposed to you staying. Be wary.

Having said that, sometimes the pros know best. And they may at times prefer you leave an anxious dog. That way they can concentrate on calming your dog rather than having to chat with you!

7. ASK FOR A TOUR

Before booking in for an appointment, it’s best to phone up and ask for a tour of the facility first. You will be able to see firsthand the cleanliness of the salon. And the manner in which the groomers handle the dogs in their care.

8. ASKING QUESTIONS

When you’re thinking of booking your dog in for an appointment at a salon; it’s a good idea to ask some questions before making a decision. Here are some that may be worth asking:

  1. Where did you train?
  2. Do you have facilities for all sizes of dog?
  3. Will an apprentice or a certified groomer be working with my dog?
  4. Are you experienced at grooming (insert dog breed here!).
  5. How do you deal with anxious pooches?
  6. Can I stay and watch the first time you groom him?
  7. How are the dogs dried, are they supervised?
  8. What happens in the case of an emergency?

9. QUESTIONS WORK BOTH WAYS

An astute dog groomer will have questions for you too; these could include:

  1. Is your dog up to date on vaccinations?
  2. Does he have any behavioral issues?
  3. Are there any injuries we should be aware of?
  4. How is he with other dogs?
  5. Has he been to a professional groomer before?
  6. Is your dog crate trained?
  7. Is he nervous or anxious with new people?

LISTEN TO YOUR GUT!

But the most important thing that you can do when deciding on a groomer is to listen to your gut!

Finding a grooming salon that goes out of their way to ensure yours, and your dog’s comfort will be a stress free experience for you and your dog!

And don’t forget, for the best results you should book your dog in for frequent visits. The frequency, of course, depends on whether you own a low shedding or heavy shedding breed!
