The air is turning more crisp (at least if you’re in the Northeast!), leaves are changing colors and kids around the world are heading back to school – that’s what many think of when the month of September comes to mind. However, what does this season mean for your pets? Did you know each fall the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) sees an increase in back-to-school related pet poisonings? That’s right, you may not realize the hidden perils around your home as you and your family’s daily routine changes; especially if you’re a first-time pet owner! Be mindful of the following tips and you’re sure to have a safe and healthy start to the school year!

The ASPCA recommends the following advice if you have kids heading back to school in a household that also has pets:

Backpacks
After a long school day, many kids dump their backpacks on the floor when they arrive at home. You remember doing that, right? Instead of making this the norm, designate an area in your home for backpacks that’s out of reach of your pets. Some dogs are very good at unzipping backpacks and helping themselves to the contents inside. Common backpack contents like glue, sugar free gum (with xylitol), raisins and medications should never be accessible to pets.

The Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) commonly receives calls related to ADHD medications (which often contain amphetamines), albuterol inhalers and over-the-counter pain medications—all of which can cause serious and life-threatening toxicity in dogs and cats.

Lunchboxes
Kids often leave leftover food in their lunchboxes which they then leave in their backpacks on the floor at home. The APCC has received reports of pets becoming very ill after getting into lunchboxes containing toxic foods such as grapes, raisins, onions, macadamia nuts and occasionally, moldy foods. Don’t let them get their paws on anything they shouldn’t!

Not only are potential poisonings a cause for concern, but pet owners must be mindful of the change in routine. Dogs might get less exercise or attention because kids aren’t around to play with them or take them out for extra walks. If you’re looking to keep your pups busy during the day, try investing in puzzle toys to stimulate their minds and get them moving!

If you have extra money and know of a reputable daycare nearby, doggie day care can help pass the time and give your pet some new buddies. Your pup will play, socialize, and come home happy and calm. No matter what you do, be sure to spend extra time with your pets when you and your children are home to keep them happy; dogs can get lonely too!
