As more and more folks choose to adopt from shelters, mutts are becoming more mainstream! Have you ever met a pup and asked the owner what breed he or she is only to find out, we’re not sure, she/he’s a mix! Now, the first Sunday of May is nationally known as “Mayday for Mutts” and we couldn’t be happier to have an excuse to celebrate these adorable doggos!
Millennials are now the largest generation of pet owners and it seems Gen Y doesn’t care much if their furry friends are purebred or not. With this shift in mindsets, more folks are fighting to eliminate canine discrimination.
A great way to celebrate this day is to encourage folks to adopt! Many dream of owning a certain breed– from a husky to a saint bernard to a dalmation– but you never know who you’ll fall in love with once you walk into a pet rescue! You may find a mutt whose sweet face you can’t resist. In fact, approximately 80 percent of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. Even if you have your heart set on a certain breed, take a look at the sweet pets at your local shelter. Remember, one of the country’s most beloved movie dogs is Benji, a mixed breed terrier!
Plus, mutts tend to be:
- Healthy
- Intelligent
- Better Behaved
- Grateful for a loving home!
Mayday for mutts is also a great way to promote the adoption of senior and/or disabled pets. While many folks rave over puppies, there are way too many senior dogs (and mutts!) looking for their furever homes. What you may not realize is that these senior mutts often have the best of all qualities you’re looking for in a pet! Sharing your home with a mutt is like enjoying your favorite ice cream with all of the best, different, toppings!
Even if you can’t adopt today, consider donating to a rescue of your choice. Most shelters are non-profits and strictly depend on the donations of folks like you to help care for the pets! Even if you skip your morning coffee for just one day to donate that money to a shelter, you’re making a difference for the mutts in this world.
