Founded in 1979, the Animal Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit law organization that protects the rights of animals through the legal system. In 2008, the organization created the National Justice for Animals Week which takes place at the end of every February. This year, the dates are Feb. 24 through March 2. Throughout this week, various events happen around the country to celebrate both animal heroes and honor animal victims.

While I know my team at Puff & Fluff and all of our lovely community members treat their pets with love and tenderness, it’s important to remember and help those pets less fortunate than ours. This February, I encourage you to join me in serving as a voice for those animals who are used in research, held captive, and kept in poor conditions in zoos, on farms, and other places.

It is our duty as pet parents to give a voice to these defenseless animals. Want to learn more about what the Animal Legal Defense Fund is working on each and every day? Here are the top issues the team is working on:

  • Puppy Mills
  • Ag-Gag Laws
  • Stop the Hunt
  • Animals’ Legal Status

While National Justice for Animals Week is a big deal for the Animal Legal Defense Fund every year, this year also happens to be the organization’s 40th anniversary! Founded by passionate attorneys, folks in this organization have remained active in shaping the emerging field of animal law and demanding stronger enforcement of anti-cruelty laws and more humane treatment of animals across the country and around the world.

There is still so much work to be done to protect and serve all animals on this planet– not just cats, dogs, and other pets we may have in our homes. I hope you’ll join me in supporting the Animal Legal Defense Fund not just this week but in the months and years ahead as well! The organization also provides public education through seminars, workshops, and other outreach efforts throughout the year– check out their website for more information. Let 2019 be the year you get involved in being a champion for animal rights!
